End hunger, achieve food security and better nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
Although the situation has improved in many countries, many people around the world still go hungry or suffer from malnutrition. Malnutrition affects nearly 800 million people worldwide, most of whom are women and children. The 2030 Agenda aims to end hunger and all forms of malnutrition in the world in the next 15 years. In view of the rapidly increasing global demand for food, it is estimated that global food production would have to more than double by 2050. 70% of undernourished people depend directly or indirectly on agriculture for their livelihood. Consequently, it is precisely small farmers who are threatened by malnutrition.
Goal 2 includes a sub-goal on ending all forms of malnutrition in addition to ending hunger. The quality of the food is as important as the quantity. The goal also integrates economic aspects, including a doubling of agricultural productivity and the incomes of small farmers by 2030. To ensure that increasing food production does not come at the expense of the environment, Objective 2 also includes targets to ensure sustainable agriculture.
