Landquart GR/Schaan – The Grisons-based start-up The Green Mountain wants to grow its so-called protein peas in Switzerland for the first time. Thus, the cultivation takes place closer to the production. In this way, the Hilcona subsidiary aims to shorten transport routes and save CO2.

The Green Mountain wants to grow its so-called protein peas in Switzerland for the first time. To this end, the Grisons-based start-up already conducted a successful pilot project last year, according to a press release.

“Swiss protein pea cultivation guarantees proximity to our suppliers and producers,” says Werner Ott, CEO of The Green Mountain. Thanks to the shorter transport routes, the start-up wants to save CO2. Another advantage is that Swiss protein peas naturally do not require fertilizer, as Andreas Messerli, an agricultural expert at Liechtenstein-based Hilcona AG, explains in the release.

The Green Mountain, a subsidiary of Hilcona, specializes in the development and production of vegan foods. Its range includes various meat alternatives, such as plant-based versions of sausage and schnitzel. The start-up operates at the HilconaTasteFactory in Landquart. ce/ssp
