rrreefs restors reef ecosystems | I4N Award Winner 2024

rrreefs is a science-driven startup focused on restoring coral reefs using modular, 3D-printed clay structures. Founded in response to the accelerating collapse of reef ecosystems, the company bridges ecological research with practical design to bring damaged reefs back to life — quickly, sustainably, and at scale. rrreefs won the Innovate 4 Nature Award 2024 in the category “Nature as Infrastructure”.

Restoring reef ecosystems with Rrreefs

From Scientific Insight to Direct Action

rrreefs was founded after a turning point: global coral bleaching events that highlighted the urgent need to act. Co-founder Dr. Ulrike Pfreundt, a microbial oceanographer, left academia to build real-world solutions. The company’s mission — to revive 1% of coastal coral reefs by 2034 — reflects this commitment to tangible, lasting impact on both oceans and people.

A Nature-Inspired, Modular Solution

At the heart of rrreefs’ approach is a system of 3D-printed clay bricks, designed like Lego. These structures replicate natural reef complexity, creating ideal conditions for coral larvae to settle and for marine species to return. This biodiversity is key to healthy, resilient ecosystems — the foundation for thriving coastal communities.

Scalable, Local, and Built for the Future

Rrrreefs’ system is lightweight, easy to assemble, and deployable even in remote areas — empowering local teams to take restoration into their own hands. As part of its mission to restore 700 kilometers of reef by 2034, the company is working to reduce costs and eventually replace concrete wave breakers with living, growing reef infrastructure.
