Solothurn – This year, Regio Energie Solothurn is awarding its prize for energy efficiency, climate protection and sustainability to two organizations at once: the Restessbar Solothurn association and the Discherheim Solothurn, which provides housing and jobs for people with disabilities.

Regio Energie Solothurn did not just award a prize for energy efficiency, climate protection and sustainability as usual at the annual Energy Forum. This year, according to a statement, two organizations were honored instead: the Restessbar Solothurn association and the Discherheim Solothurn foundation.

The association Restessbar rescues food. Since 2017, its members have been volunteering to collect fruits, vegetables, pastries and beverages from partner companies that would otherwise end up in the trash. They are then sorted and distributed to about 300 people on twelve tours per week. This saves around 26 tons of still consumable food from disposal every year. In addition, the association conducts educational work against food waste and supports students in the development of a cookbook.

At the Discherheim, “care is taken to ensure that everything you do has as long an effect as possible,” according to Regio Energie Solothurn. At the three sites of the foundation, which provides housing and jobs for people with impairments, this also applies in terms of energy efficiency and resource conservation, both in converting the heating source and the fleet of six vehicles to electric drives. The electricity for this comes from the company’s own photovoltaic system. In addition, biotope, hedges, natural meadow, insect hotels and bird houses contribute to biodiversity. ce/mm
