Zug/Senago – Holcim has acquired Nicem, a company based in Senago near Bergamo. Through the acquisition of the ground calcium carbonate specialist, the building materials producer aims to accelerate the environmentally friendly formulation of sustainable aggregates and ready-mix concrete.

Holcim acquired the northern Italian company Nicem srl. The company from the province of Milan produces ground calcium carbonate. The versatile, low-carbon raw material is suitable for a wide range of applications, Holcim said in a media release.

Nicem’s broad customer base ranges from the construction industry to the plastics, rubber and paint industries, he said. With this acquisition, Holcim aims to accelerate the environmentally friendly formulation of its green concrete and cement mixes such as ECOPact and ECOPlanet.

“Nicem perfectly complements our existing activities,” Holcim’s European head Miljan Gutovic is quoted as saying. The Italian company’s raw material would enable Holcim to tap “a new source of alternative materials for decarbonization” of aggregates and ready-mix concrete. Nicem’s “valuable expertise” will help Holcim accelerate its “green growth,” he said. mm
