Zurich-based engineering and consulting firm Helbling takes a holistic approach to decarbonization. To successfully realize a client project, Helbling therefore brings together experts from a variety of disciplines, according to a technical article.
For example, experts from the fields of process technology, thermodynamics, fluid simulation, mechanics, electronics and software often work together on a project to reduce greenhouse gases. Specialists also come from project management and systems engineering in the field of plant engineering. In particular, the projects also deal with improving the energy balance in the area of mobility. This is because transport was responsible for 38 percent of Swiss CO2 emissions in 2021.
There are four ways to reduce CO2. The first, according to the technical article, is not to release any CO2 at all, for example by “electrifying equipment and vehicles previously equipped with combustion engines. If full electrification is not possible, partial electrification, hybridization, increased efficiency, and the use of biogenic fuels are other options.
Once these approaches have been exhausted, two more come into question. These include CO2 extraction from the exhaust gases and CO2 recovery from the ambient air. Helbing has years of experience in all of these areas. The EcoDesign approach, i.e., the systematic analysis of the environmental performance of new and existing products and services, has also proven its worth. ce/ko
