Zurich/Winterthur – The Electricity Works of the Canton of Zurich (EKZ), the Electricity Works of the City of Zurich (ewz) and Stadtwerk Winterthur want to realize joint projects for wind energy in the Canton of Zurich. They have created the cooperation Zurich Wind for this purpose.
EKZ, ewz and Stadtwerk Winterthur join forces for the use of wind energy in the canton of Zurich. They intend to realize joint wind projects at sites designated by the canton of Zurich in the cantonal structure plan, the partner companies inform in a joint statement. For this purpose, they have created the cooperation Zurich Wind.
The governments of the cities of Zurich and Winterthur have already given this cooperation the green light. “With EKZ, ewz and Stadtwerk Winterthur, three strong partners have joined forces to further expand local energy production and supply the population in the city and canton of Zurich with even more renewable energy,” Michael Baumer, Zurich City Councilor, is quoted as saying in the release. “With wind projects in the canton of Zurich, we are jointly making a valuable contribution to renewable electricity production and to our climate and energy policy goals,” explains Winterthur City Councilor Stefan Fritschi there.
In the basic report of the construction directorate of the Canton of Zurich, around 50 areas are identified as potentially suitable for the use of wind energy. However, the construction and operation of wind turbines did not meet with the approval of the population everywhere, according to the statement. Zürich Wind will therefore “only realize wind projects with the support of the local population,” explains EKZ CEO Urs Rengel. ce/hs
