Sirnach TG – The energy company EKT Holding AG has established a foundation for sustainable energy projects. Eligible projects have been able to apply since mid-July.

Starting July 14, 2023, companies planning sustainable and innovative energy projects can apply for funding from the newly established EKT Energy Foundation. According to a media release, EKT Holding AG is thus responding to the challenges of the times: 60 percent of energy is generated from fossil fuels, and in the next two decades the nuclear power plants operating in Switzerland are expected to cease operations. Accordingly, technological alternatives are in demand. The new foundation aims to help position the canton of Thurgau as a pioneer in the field of renewable energy supply, according to the announcement. The funding strategy provides, for example, support for innovative approaches in the areas of renewable energy production, energy storage, digitization of the energy system and energy efficiency.

“Innovative technologies and concepts are needed to ensure security of supply while meeting climate targets,” Foundation Board President Fabian Etter is quoted as saying in the release. “With the EKT Energy Foundation, we help ensure that pilot projects, for example, can be implemented and start-up financing can be provided.”

The geographical area of operation includes in particular the canton of Thurgau and the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, St.Gallen and Schaffhausen. The foundation capital dedicated by EKT amounts to 200,000 Swiss francs and will be increased by 3.8 million Swiss francs from dividends generated in 2022 from EKT’s stake in Axpo Holding AG. ce/ww
